Safety Technology

The whole point of self driving cars is that they are a safer alternative to human driven cars. The main safety feature is the LiDAR, or light detection and ranging, sensor that views the world and creates a three dimensional model so the car knows what is happening in the world around it. The car also has several other sensors placed strategically around its perimeter. There are rear and side sensors that let the car detect other vehicles and hazards and avoid them. There is even a normal video camera that faces out the windshield so the car can see like a human driver. When all of these sensors and cameras are put together with a self driving cars software and machine learning capabilities, the result is a safer vehicle that can not only detect and avoid accidents but can learn to be safer with every mile it drives.
