One of the best applications of self driving car technology is its inclusion in semi trucks. While the technology is still being tested, the idea is that trucks can drive for longer and get to their destinations faster. Since the trucks won’t have to stop for the night so the driver can sleep they will arrive sooner and more companies will be able to ship products across the country faster. Another benefit is that since the trucks will be driving through the night they can cover more ground in safer traffic conditions when they are the only vehicles on the road. Right now semi trucks can’t drive over night because of safety laws requiring drivers to sleep for a set number of hours at a set time of day. Between the increase in safety and the decrease in wait time the introduction of self driving semi trucks is a step towards the future.
